Varanasi is the spiritual heart of India. On the first full moon of March the Holy festival starts, it is the celebration of the end and a new beginning, it is the celebration for spring. In the city of Shiva you'll find his trident which he usually holds in one of his hands.Bhubaneswar old town. Thousands of people are waiting in a row to enter the Temple on Shiva-day. (24/02)
The internship at KISS gives us the opportunity to learn about the 62 original tribes of India. At the Kalinga Institute for Social Sciences they provide housing, education and healthcare for 25.000 children. Together with my friend and co-photographer Daphne, we will document the tribes and try to understand what this means for Tribal India. We are given the task to make a coffee-table book for the institute. There is much to cover as we will document all facilities at the school, portrait the children en visit all 62 tribes that are scattered over Orissa.
Our first stop was Moscow, it was minus 17 degrees as we waited for 10 hours in the airport, observing the Russian employers in the coffee house. Everyone had the same look over their face, they seemed very sad, unhappy, as if they where abused day in day out. Moving on to Delhi, the overly busy city full of exhaust gases and feces did catch our attention. Especially when we watched the insane traffic and the cows, they walked in between.
Brahma, the Creator Brahma is the first member of the Hindu Trinity and is “the Creator” because he periodically creates everything in the universe. (The word periodically here refers to the Hindu belief that time is cyclical; everything in the universe — except for Brahman and certain Hindu scriptures — is created, maintained for a certain amount of time, and then destroyed in order to be renewed in ideal form again.)
